The Vertigo pendant is a thing of beauty. It conjures up images of a fancy church hat, a Stingray magically gliding through the water, a clear umbrella, a dominatrix ballerina skirt, and an out-of-shape bicycle rim.
This stand-out light fixture was created by French designer, Constance Guisset. Guisset has won various awards including the Grand Prix du Design de la Ville de Paris, the Prize for the Public at the Design Parade at la Villa Noailles and the Audi Talent Award. In 2010, she was elected among the ten designers of the year at the Maison & Object design fair. Her studio specialises in product, interior and set design, and the designers and architects aim to create dreamlike, animated objects and spaces that evoke a sense of wonder.
The Vertigo is a large light made of ribbons. When lit, it turns softly, projecting a graphic shadow pattern on the surrounding walls, and responds to the slightest draught. I imagine it would be the perfect catalyst for an evening game of shadow puppets. Who wouldn’t be into that?
I’m sure that as you shop for lighting your first thoughts are, who designed this? Did they win awards? Okay, probably not. In a world of fast fashion, fast design, copy cats, insta-this and insta-that, and plain old’ disregard for quality over quantity, I thought I shed some light (ahem, ahem) on a gem like the Vertigo Pendant and its creator.
This light fits well with almost any design style and creates a beautiful focal point. Here are some great examples of the Vertigo pendant in all it’s glory.
