Yeah, you read the title correctly. And yes, a bed on the floor really can be beautiful.

When we moved into our new house, we didn’t unpack much because we were planning to renovate right away. For a long time, most of the rooms in the house only had furniture that was completely necessary; no books on display, no art on the walls and no chachkas. We didn’t even put our bed frame together. We just put our box spring and mattress on the floor. At first, I hated it because it didn’t feel homey and reminded me of a struggling university student’s bedroom. After a while, the stark bedroom with a lone mattress made me crazy, so I started to find ways to make it feel more like a grown-up bedroom. By the end of it, I was in love with the bed-on-floor look. I love it so much that I’m considering making it permanent.

I know it seems odd, but it really can look clean, put together and stylish. Here are some beautiful examples of beds on the floor and some of my tips for getting a gorgeous, grown-up looking bedroom without a bed frame.

A bed on the floor doesn’t have to look like struggeling artist’s apartment. It’s all about how you dress it up.
Amping it up the style factor is all about about good bed placement, beautiful linens, using texture, and low-profile funtiure.

Tips for amping up the style on your floor bed

  • Use two mattresses or a mattress and a box spring to add height to the bed. Height will make the bed look grander.
  • Place your mattress in front of the most visually pleasing wall or window in the room. If you don’t have a nice wall or window, add a large piece of art to the wall at the head of the bed. It will act a natural headboard.
  • Use a rug to define the bed area and add colour and texture to the room.
  • Use low profile furniture to match the furniture levels to the mattress level. If you can’t find the right height pieces in traditional furniture, look to unique and unusual pieces, such as stools, pouffes, crates, spare chairs and stacked magazines or books.
  • The most important part is to make the bed a show-stopping focal point by adding luxury and comfort with large pillows, multiple duvets and beautiful line.
