I often overhear people chatting, more like gossiping, about people who overdo it with makeup or shapewear, so much so that they don’t know what the person looks like without all that stuff. Thanks, Kardashians!

From makeup to fashion, everything seems to be overdone, but right now there seems to be a “backlash” against looking like you’re trying too hard. In comes the newest trend the “no-makeup” makeup look. Let me assure you that while it sounds like less makeup being worn this trend hasn’t had much of an effect on that. You’d think we’d see a decline in makeup purchases, but nope. The only thing that seems to have changed is that people are slathering on nude looking skin-like colours to create the appearance of effortless beauty. Hilarious.

The no-makeup makeup trend has also created the rise of the no-makeup makeup brand, say that twice. Brands like Glossier are making millions off the trend in addition to being the driving force of the no-make makeup guide and video.

This trend got me thinking about trends in design, such as the rise of Scandinavian design and minimalism – all of which I have indulged. I then started thinking about all the paint we put on furniture and walls. While I’m a lover of natural wood and would prefer never to paint or stain wood, I understand there are instances where there is little to no option. I think stairs and bannisters are the lost souls that get slathered with paint to “pretty” them up. I bet secretly they wish we’d take off all the “cake” a.k.a makeup and let their natural beauty shine through.

So, here I am to save the day with an edit of natural wood stairs dawning their best no-makeup make look.

Stripped back with a barely there finished let’s the beauty of the wood shine through.

Existential beauty crisis aside, I’m a fan of the basically bare natural wood look on stairs. So look out world, here I come with my sander and scrapper in hand to save stairs everywhere from makeup aka paint.
